What is it?

Porcelain veneers are thin shells (0.3-0.5 mm) that bond to the visible side of teeth to improve their appearance. They solve cosmetic problems that whitening or orthodontics cannot fix: stained teeth that don't respond to whitening, worn teeth, small fractures, irregular shapes, gaps between teeth, and tooth size disproportion.

Unlike crowns, veneers are much less invasive: only the front face of the tooth is worked on, the entire tooth is not covered. Porcelain perfectly mimics the translucency of natural enamel, so the result is indistinguishable from a healthy tooth.

The price is calculated per unit. Most commonly 4 to 8 veneers are placed (the teeth that show when smiling). The total depends on the number of veneers the dentist deems necessary in your case. This is always decided in person after evaluating your full smile.

How is the process?

  1. 1

    Digital smile design

Photographs and records are taken to digitally design the final result. You can see a preview before accepting the treatment.

  2. 2

    Minimal enamel reshaping

A very thin layer (0.3-0.5 mm) of the front face of the tooth is removed. In some cases this can be done without reshaping (no-prep veneers).

  3. 3

    Digital impressions

Exact measurements are recorded with intraoral scanner. Provisional veneers are placed while the lab fabricates the definitive ones.

  4. 4

    Lab fabrication

A specialized dental technician fabricates each veneer to measure. Takes 1-2 weeks.

  5. 5

    Final cementation

In the final appointment they are tried, adjusted and cemented with a high-strength adhesive that creates a permanent bond with the tooth.

How long does it take?

The complete process from design to cementation lasts 2 to 4 weeks. Usually requires 2-3 clinic visits. Quality porcelain veneers last 10-20 years with good maintenance.

What is included

  • Initial study and digital smile design
  • Minimal enamel reshaping (when applicable)
  • Digital impression with intraoral scanner
  • Lab fabrication of the veneer
  • Provisional veneers
  • Cementation and final adjustments
  • Review at 2 weeks

What is NOT included

  • Previous treatments needed (cavities, root canals, gums)
  • Whitening of teeth without veneers (recommended before to match shades)
  • Replacements for breakage caused by untreated bruxism

Expected results

Results are immediate upon cementing the definitive veneers. Porcelain maintains color and shine virtually unchanged throughout its lifespan — it does not stain like natural enamel with coffee, wine or tobacco. With good maintenance and hygiene, veneers can last 15-20 years before needing replacement.

Aftercare

  • Maintain regular dental hygiene: brushing, floss and mouthwash
  • Avoid biting hard objects (ice, pencils, nails) that could chip the porcelain
  • If you clench or grind your teeth (bruxism), wear a night guard
  • Visit the dentist every 6 months for professional cleaning and review
  • If a veneer detaches or breaks, see the dentist immediately (do not glue it at home)

Frequently asked questions

How many veneers do I need?

Depends on your smile. Most common is 4-8 veneers (the teeth visible when smiling broadly). Some cases only need 2 or 4 central veneers, others require treating 10-12 teeth for a complete transformation. The dentist determines this in person.

Do porcelain veneers stain?

No, porcelain is virtually impervious to stains from coffee, wine, tobacco or tea — unlike natural enamel and white fillings. They maintain their original color throughout their lifespan.

How long do veneers last?

Between 10 and 20 years depending on material and care. Well-cared-for high-quality porcelain veneers can last more than 15 years before needing replacement. Composite (resin) ones last less, 5-10 years.

Can veneers be removed?

Yes, but since a thin layer of enamel was removed, once placed you will always need some kind of restoration on those teeth. That's why it's important to decide carefully and choose an experienced dentist.

Do veneers hurt?

No. Reshaping is done with local anesthesia and is minimal. After placement there may be mild sensitivity for a few days that subsides with common pain relievers.
